Wake Smith Solicitors' fourth year of championing Sheffield Museums’ legacy programme has been launched with a series of exclusive online and in-person events.
The Sheffield solicitors’ teamed up with Sheffield Museums in 2018 to reinforce the importance of donating to the city’s museums through a Will to help leave a lasting legacy for future generations to enjoy.
The events over the coming months allows museum staff, Friends, donors and Wake Smith clients exclusive behind the scenes access to some of the most important and historic collections in the city.
Suzanne Porter, director of the Wills and Probate team at Wake Smith said: “We have supported, and worked in partnership with Sheffield Museums for four years and using our expertise, have helped develop, and grow, a legacy programme that will ensure Sheffield Museums continues to thrive, and that inspirational art and heritage remains accessible to everyone.
“The museums are a firm favourite amongst our staff. For many, a trip to one of Sheffield's museums to see the city’s historic collections was a big part of their childhood and created lasting memories.
"We are proud to build on this well-established partnership with such a prestigious organisation that has a great audience reach and a reputation for providing a quality service."
Suzanne Porter joined Kim Streets, Chief Executive of Sheffield Museums, to launch the programme of in person and online events in October Wills Week, which gave staff and volunteers, including new Trust staff members from Sheffield Industrial Museums, the chance to find out more about making a Will.
The next event, a curatorial talk on The Legacy of John Ruskin, takes place today (Thursday 21 October) and will allow Friends of Sheffield Museums and Wake Smith clients the chance to take a look at the legacy of the founder of the Ruskin Collection, first displayed in the Museum of St George at Walkley in 1875, but now in the Millennium Gallery.
Kim Streets added: “It was Ruskin’s personal donations of money, land and art collections that established the Ruskin Collection; almost 150 years later, his generosity has ensured that that this remarkable collection continues to be shared with the people of Sheffield and will be enjoyed for years to come.”
January’s A Night at The Museum event, which includes a drinks reception, offers Wake Smith clients the opportunity to learn more about the collection and celebrate the city’s industrial heritage at Kelham Island Museum.
The event will focus on objects that have been gifted, or have significant history plus the impressive River Don Steam Engine will be in full working order, giving guests the opportunity to see this great piece of Sheffield engineering in action.
The final event in April 2022 is a public information and advice event at Weston Park Museum to raise awareness of importance of Wills in ensuring a legacy for further generations.
