One of the main representative bodies for doctors, the Medical Defence Union, in their 2011 annual report, reveal that disciplinary cases against GPs and hospital doctors are at an all-time high and have increased by 56% since 2010.
The reason for the large increase is unknown.
What is clear is that GPs are under great time constraint, with many having to see over 100 patients each week, meaning that each appointment can last as little as a couple of minutes.
Whilst the UK does have a commendable National Health Service, GPs are only human and occasionally some mistakes are made. Many of these mistakes are unlikely to be of any serious significance and will be picked up at a subsequent appointment. However, occasionally some mistakes can have serious consequences.
We are currently investigating a number of claims against GPs on behalf of clients where GPs have failed to diagnose and treat against a background history suggestive of a serious condition, such as cancer. Such inaction has resulted in a delay in treatment, which in a condition such as cancer can have grave consequences.
