Neil Salter

Head of Property

Lives:  Dore, Sheffield

Education:  A good old boys grammar school in York. Quite academic but a fair bit of corporal punishment, rugby and lunchtime smoking thrown in. I only went in for the latter. Then to Newcastle University where I made some lifetime friends, and Chester College of Law, where I didn’t

Work History: I was in West Yorkshire from qualifying until I saw the light and moved from Dibb Lupton Broomhead (now DLA) in Leeds to Wake Smith in sunny Sheffield in early 1995

What was your first job?  Paper boy if that counts, check-out assistant, kitchen porter if not. All in my home town of York

What did you think you would be when you grew up?  I wanted to be a doctor and made a real effort with maths and sciences in the year before O- levels but it was just beyond me

Where is the best place to go for office gossip?  I don’t get much, if any, gossip these days. Over the years I think I’ve featured quite a bit!

What is the best thing about your job?  Great clients and colleagues, many of whom I’ve kind of grown up with (you don’t start growing up until you’re 35 do you?!)

What is the worst thing about your job?  Ticking boxes

What and where is your favourite restaurant?  Marco @ Milano at Millhouses is excellent for food quality, service and overall ambience. I’ve become a big fan over the last 18 months. Brilliant value during the week as well.

What book are you reading?  I don’t really get the chance at the moment….

If you were stranded on a desert island, which two luxury items would you take?  I take it that my partner is an essential?! If so, some form of music player and a crate of San Miguel. If not, we’ll do without the music

If a film was being made of your life, who would you want to play you and why?  I’m notoriously ignorant about films etc so what about Danny de Vito?!

Who would you least like to be stuck in a lift with?  I could pretty well get on with anyone for a while so long as their personal hygiene is in order

Which 3 celebrities would you invite to your perfect dinner party (alive or dead)?  I’m really not big on celebrities but Kate Moss has always intrigued me (and she likes a drink apparently), Michael Stipe (former frontman of REM) who would be the sensible one and Boris Johnson. Ideally, the evening would end with BJ being found guilty of treason on account of his role in Brexit.

What do you enjoy in your spare time?  I enjoy Bodypump at the gym, particularly when it’s just finished. Watching football either live or on television, listening to music and I’m very keen on trying new wines and relaxing with my partner either at home or having a coffee or a pint out

Who is your hero and why?  I’ve learnt that people who are your heroes one minute can fall from grace. I’ve always admired those prepared to risk life and limb for a just cause in non-democratic countries, so I’ll go with Nelson Mandela
