Cosmetic surgery (also referred to as plastic surgery) is an operation or procedure that is performed to change your appearance. The reasons for undertaking cosmetic surgery are numerous and often very personal.
Given its wide definition, cosmetic surgery does not just refer to procedures intended to change naturally occurring features but also includes reconstructive surgery which may be necessary following medical treatment or trauma. Cosmetic surgery claims can arise out of breast reconstruction following a mastectomy for breast cancer, skin grafts following an accident, or surgery to improve the appearance of scarring.
With the popularity of cosmetic surgery increasing, it is now easily accessible on the high street in the UK. Non–surgical procedures such as Botox injections and dermal fillers can currently be performed by practitioners with no formal medical training which can increase the risk of something going wrong, or being left without adequate follow-up if it does.
In 2013 the Government published the Keogh Report into recommendations to protect people who choose cosmetic surgery.
However, the regulation introduced has been only voluntary. We share the call on the Government to fully implement the Keogh Recommendations to make regulation of those providing cosmetic procedures, the places they are carried out and the products themselves compulsory.
A cosmetic surgery or procedure is no different to any other procedure in terms of the claims that can be brought against a private practitioner, private hospital or the NHS. Your surgeon should have discussed your procedure beforehand in a consultation, outlining all possible outcomes and you should be given a reasonable period of time between your initial consultation and the surgery itself to give you time to think about your choice and make the right decision.
