Education:

John obtained an LLB (Hons) law degree at Newcastle University. He continued his law studies at Chester College of Law and qualified as a solicitor in 1982 after completing his training, which was split between Cole & Cole in Oxford and Peake & Co in central London. He specialised in defendant clinical negligence work on behalf of the Middlesex Hospital at Peake & Co, before moving to Sheffield in 1989 to concentrate on claimant clinical negligence work.

John is an Accredited Personal Injury Specialist - Senior Litigatior by the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers.

Main Areas of Work:

John is a Member of the AvMA (Action against Medical Accidents) Specialist Clinical Negligence Panel and a Senior Litigator of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers (APIL).

  • Specialist in birth and spinal injury claims, surgical errors, misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis of cancer, nursing errors and claims against GPs, opticians and practitioners of complementary medicine.
  • Human Rights Act claims.
  • Extensive experience of personal injury work, including product liability claims.
  • Member of the South Yorkshire Medico-Legal Society.

Great / Notable achievements at Wake Smith:

  • £4.9 million for paraplegia following fall from hospital window.
  • £500,000 for an overdose of radiation during cancer treatment.
  • £4,000 for misprescription of drugs in a nursing home.
  • £250,000 for nerve injury during spinal surgery.

John enjoys travelling, walking, cycling, live music and reading. He is still chasing membership of the elusive 92 Club by attending all 92 football league grounds while supporting Oxford United.
