Delays In Cancer Diagnosis

Wake Smith Solicitors 13 November 2014

Waiting for results informing whether or not you have cancer is an excruciating time, for all concerned. At such pivotal moments we look to the medical profession to do all they can, as quickly as they can, in a manner which is both assuring and informative. The vast majority of doctors and nurses working within the field of Oncology (cancer treatment) perform that specialist work to a standard which has made British treatment some of the best in the world. However delays can happen either at the initial GP consultation stage (where GPs may be slow to consider a suspected problem) or the issue could be post-referral. Very often it is the case that GPs refer suspected cancer patients but they (the patients) are then lost in the NHS machine. Officially, someone with suspected cancer should be seen by a specialist no more than 2 weeks from referral stage. However, how long a patient actually needs to wait before treatment begins can depend on how long it takes to diagnose them in the first place. It may be the genuine aim of the medical profession to provide the services set out in guidelines but it is patients who are left picking up the pieces if owing to a delayed diagnosis their cancer has progressed. Last month, in recognition of this, Cancer Research UK 'blogged' that delayed diagnoses was "costing lives and money". Cancers can take numerous forms and vary according to the part of the body affected and in line with circumstances of that individual. It is a gruelling disease which, if treatable, can require a very harsh remedy; this affects both the patient and their loved ones. Early diagnosis can save lives.
